It’s undeniable that the developed world is moving into smaller, more efficient homes. However, Berlin-based designer Van Bo Le-Mentzel, has taken this trend to its most extreme with his One-SQM-House.

As its name suggests, One-SQM-House is a house with one square meter of floor area. The house can be turned on its side to serve as a bed or lounge, or in its upright position, as an office or on-the-go meeting place.

Wheels are attached to the base of the One-SQM-House to ensure maximum portability. Van Bo’s idea is that your home should follow you wherever you go.

The plans for One-SQM-House are being given out by the designer for free. This do-it-yourself house can be made using only everyday tools and materials. The Chicago Coalition for the Homeless has started an initiative getting homeless youth to build their first One-SQM-House.

If you want to try living in the One-SQM-House in Berlin, you can send your request to Van Bo on Airbnb.

Videos:

Van Bo answers why he made the world’s smallest house:

Music Festivals are great, but they are notorious for leaving behind a mountain of trash. To help battle this problem, the folks at Glad have designed a solution that encourages participants to clean up after themselves: The Trash Bag Tent.

Glad’s Trash Bag Tent is a one-person tent made from Glad ForceFlex material. During the festival, it provides a temporary place to rest in, and when the festival is done, it turns into a large bag for the trash you have collected over the course of the event.

Samples were handed out through the help of Miami-based advertising agency Alma, at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, TX last March. The tents were provided for free, on the condition that the recipients would throw their trash away in this bag when they leave. The case study turned out positively.

As the issue of housing shortage continues to worsen in developed cities around the world, non-for-profit organizations and governments are looking at alternative solutions. Reportedly, YMCA in east London is looking to redesign shipping containers into temporary homes for struggling young adults.

While occupants work their way for a better future, these temporary homes will serve as a stepping stone towards independence. The details of the design are going to make all the difference in ensuring these containers transform into dignified living spaces.

These shipping container homes are to be equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, and plasterboard walls. They are to be built in multi-storey blocks, with balconies and external stairs to the upper levels.

A common concern for glass french press sets is that if the glass breaks, you’d have to replace the whole set. With the Portland Press, the mason jar glass is thicker and if it ever breaks, you can easily replace it.

Here’s something bicycle lovers would love – a shelf to display their beloved bicycle like a prized trophy. Meet Postfossil‘s Shoes Books and a Bike.

Shoes Books and a Bike is a storage stand that, as its name implies, can store shoes, books, a bike and all kinds of other stuff. It is made of clean simple materials such as pine, screws and coconut fibre.

It features a large clip that holds the bike in place, so there’s no need to worry about the bike falling off the stand.

Chess is normally a game about strategy and setting up intricate plays. However, QWOP creator, Bennett Foddy, has released a new kind of chess that is about one thing only: speed. Breaking the traditional rules of chess, this game accommodates 16 simultaneous players and features a respawning mechanism.

Speed Chess is an interactive game played in just minutes by up to 16 players on one board. The only thing that could slow down the game is the players’ ability to quickly enter a command into the SNES controller.

The game starts by having each player move a pawn. If they get captured by an opposing piece, they respawn as one of the leftover pieces. The goal of Speed Chess is to capture the opposing side’s king.
